The Gathering has been deemed a huge success as Tourism Ireland's end of year review shows strong growth in overseas visitor numbers.

A 5% increase was forecast, which has been exceeded with a 7% rise in the number of people choosing to come to Ireland, making it an estimated eight million visitors by year end.

Dublin, Cork, Galway and Killarney are among the top performers for attracting tourists.

Niall Gibbons, chief executive of tourism Ireland, said he is aiming to increase visitor numbers to nine million by 2016.
