He was one of three children being driven in a car by their mother when the vehicle and a taxi-van were in collision on the N5 near Ballaghaderreen at around 9am this morning.

The crash happened where the main road meets a new bypass, which is still under construction.

The woman and the taxi driver were also injured in the crash, as were the two other children, who were all brought to Mayo General Hospital.

However, the infant was so seriously hurt that the air ambulance was called to transfer him to hospital in Galway.

He has since been transferred to Temple St. Children's Hospital in Dublin, suffering from serious head injuries.

The body of the woman, aged in her 50s, has now been removed to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick where a post mortem will be carried out.

The road remains closed.
