Three women and a girl - all believed to be from the same family - have been killed in a car crash in Co Westmeath.

Three women and a girl - all believed to be from the same family - have been killed in a car crash in Co Westmeath.

The crash happened near Mullingar shortly before 8am today on the N4 Dublin Sligo Road, at Port na Shangan just north of Mullingar.

The girl and three women were killed when the car they were travelling in crashed into a jeep.

The male driver and sole occupant of the jeep was taken to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The section of the N4 road is currently closed while gardaí carry out a technical examination of the scene. Diversions are in place.
