Three polls have Labour tumbling as Independents ride high

Support for Labour has fallen in three new political opinion polls.

The polls for tomorrow’s newspapers show support for Labour at 6% in one poll, and 5% in two others.

Independents are still the most popular candidates, while Sinn Féin are up in two polls and down in the other.

The three polls will make difficult reading for Joan Burton in her first Christmas as Labour leader.

The Red C poll in the Sunday Business Post puts her party at 6%, but polls by Behaviour and Attitudes for the Sunday Times, and by Millward Browne for the Sunday Independent, have them on just 5%.

Sinn Féin remains the most popular party in two polls, gaining support there, but the Sunday Independent has the party dropping 5% in two months to fall just behind Fine Gael.

However, Independents are still by some distance the most popular candidates - all three polls have them on 30% or higher, with the Independent poll claiming support is up 9%.

Fianna Fáil support is broadly steady at 18% or 19%, while depending on the poll, both Sinn Féin and Fine Gael are between 21% and 24%.
