Three held over Derry doorman's shooting
Three men have been arrested by police in the North investigating the gun death of a nightclub doorman.
Detectives said the killing may be linked to Brian McGlynn’s work as a nightclub doorman in Derry.
He was shot dead in his bed at home in the Fountain Hill area of Derry in front of his terrified girlfriend in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Detective Chief Inspector Jeff Smyth said the incident had the hallmarks of a well-planned and brutal murder.
He said: “Mr McGlynn was a doorman in a local nightclub and by the nature of what he does, he comes across a lot of individuals – people who are friendly with him and people who are not friendly with him.
“He may have become the subject of threats or abuse, as sometimes doormen are.
“If there is anything in that, I want to know about it.”
A gang of two men burst into the bedroom and shot their victim several times. He died instantly.
Detectives are trying to establish a motive for the killing, and do not know whether it was crime or paramilitary-related.
He worked at the Red Door on Duke Street.
“We know he has been victim of altercations with punters in some nightspots, though we are not saying that is the reason he was shot. That may be one of the reasons, but at this point in time I am keeping an open mind,” Mr Smyth said.
“Also, is there any other reason why Mr McGlynn should have been targeted or murdered in what is quite clearly a most callous and well-orchestrated way?
“We need to know who has done this, we need all the community to come behind us and support us. I want to do the best I can to bring the killers to justice.”
Fountain Hill is a mainly nationalist area close to major loyalist estates in the Waterside area of the city, but there has been no suggestion of a sectarian motive.
Mr McGlynn was originally from Strabane.
East Derry DUP MP Gregory Campbell said republicans should give whatever information they have about the killing to police.
“It is time for a tangible expression of support for the police. This is real support for police on the ground, visible evidence of doing so,” he said.
“We need to have that in an unambigious fashion, Sinn Féin should be saying absolutely explicitly ’anybody with information should give it to the police’.”
A spokesman for Sinn Féin said the party had established its commitment to law and order.
“Everybody should be very clear on Sinn Féin’s position. People should bring information,” he said.
“We need to see people before the courts. However, Gregory Campbell needs to grow up and stop playing politics with serious crime.”
