Three held in connection with Quinn murder

29/07/2008 - 09:11:03
Three men were arrested today in connection with the murder of Paul Quinn, who was lured into a cattle shed close to the border and beaten to death last year.

The men, in their 20s and 30s, are being held at Monaghan and Carrickmacross garda stations under the Offences Against the State Act.

They were detained after a number of raids this morning carried out by investigating gardaí with co-operation from the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Mr Quinn (aged 21) from Cullyhanna, south Armagh, was lured to an isolated Co Monaghan barn last October and beaten to death.

The paramilitary ceasefire watchdog, the International Monitoring Commission (IMC), said those behind the murder were either former Provisional IRA members or associates.

An inquest into Mr Quinn's death opened briefly in Dundalk last month so as to issue a death certificate to his grieving family.

It was then adjourned because of the ongoing cross-border police and garda investigation.

Deputy state pathologist Dr Michael Curtis said he had compiled an 18-page report.

He said Mr Quinn died from multiple injuries, due to blunt force trauma.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) spokeswoman said: "Police are supporting the ongoing investigation by the Garda.

"There will be a number of searches today in south Armagh and Co Monaghan."
