Gardaí investigating the suspicious death of a man in Athlone, Co. Westmeath have arrested three men.

They were detained after the body of a Polish man was discovered in the River Shannon last night.

At around 8.30pm last night the body of a 23-year-old man, believed to be originally from Poland, was discovered partially submerged in the River Shannon in an area known as Bogginfin, near Athlone Town.

Gardaí say a post mortem will be carried out today at University Hospital Galway to establish his exact cause of death.

It is believed the man may have been bundled into a car in Athlone town earlier that evening.

In a follow up operation last night Gardaí arrested three men in the Westmeath area. They are being questioned at Athlone and Mullingar Garda Stations under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Gardaí have sealed off the scene and are said to be conducting an investigation on the site.

They are appealing for anyone with information in relation to this man's death to contact them at Athlone Garda Station.
