Just over a third of births in the second quarter of the year were registered outside marriage or civil partnerships.
More than half of those were registered in Limerick city, while Galway county had the fewest at just under a quarter.
A total of 17,958 were born between March and May, down 2.3% on the same period last year.
New figures from the Central Statistics Office also show the number of marriages jumped by nearly 400, with a total of 5,421 registered in the three months.
