'The Elber Twomey Story' to air Monday night
TV3's new documentary strand 'Disclosure' will continue tomorrow night with 'The Elber Twomey Story', the story of a Cork woman whose husband, infant son and unborn baby were all killed when a suicidal driver hit their car during a holiday in England three years ago.
The hour long documentary tells the story of how Elber survived the crash and her life afterwards. She now campaigns from Cork to raise awareness about suicidal drivers.
The programme includes interviews with Elber, her family and friends, senior police officers in Ireland and the UK and the hospital staff who treated her family.
Speaking about what helped her cope, Elber said: "The big thing for me would have been my faith and while I would have been very cross and very angry, I suppose I would say that Holy God sent great people into my life that helped me along the way.
"That was really my rock, that and my family and the community and Con's family to be fair."
Elber's view that the police could have been better trained to handle a suicidal driver is what has led her to her new purpose, raising suicide awareness and helping improve ways in which the police service deal with and handle a person who are suicidal.
To date, the two Twomey Family Remorial weekends organised by Elber has raised more than €50,000, which has been donated to organisations such as Pieta House, Suicide Aware, Reach Out, as well as Cork University, Derriford and Torbay Hospitals.
‘Disclosure: The Elber Twomey Story’ airs tomorrow night (Monday October 5) at 10pm on TV3.
