Teenagers jailed over brutal gang rape

30/07/2004 - 17:02:25
Four teenagers who violently gang-raped a Limerick woman were sentenced to a total of 31 years’ detention today.

The four, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were aged 14, 15, 15 and 16 at the time of the attack, which occurred at a remote beauty spot six miles from Limerick.

Sentencing them to 10, 9, 8 and 4 years respectively, Justice Paul Carney described the incident as an “appalling case” and an “outrage”.

He told Dublin’s Central Criminal Court that he had a duty to offer them a chance of rehabilitation but also to protect society.

The 35-year-old woman was repeatedly raped as her partner, 36, was locked in the boot of his car at Cratloe Woods, in the early hours of January 23 this year.

Both received multiple injuries and were beaten with golf clubs, screwdrivers and a shovel.
