Teenager killed in Cork car crash

A teenager was killed instantly in a car crash in Co Cork today.

The 19-year-old lost control of his vehicle at Manch West, Dunmanway, shortly before 1am.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A garda spokesman said the main Dunmanway to Bandon Road remained closed to traffic while gardaí carried out forensic crash scene examinations.

“Gardaí are trying to establish the exact sequence of events,” he added.

Yesterday, Ireland’s roads claimed three lives while a fourth person died in the North.

A 36-year-old man was killed in Co Westmeath when the jeep he was driving crashed into a roadside post and a 24-year-old woman died in Co Laois when the car in slammed into a building.

An 80-year-old man died in hospital in Co Kerry following a two-vehicle accident on Wednesday and a 22-year-old motorcyclist was killed on the Newry by-pass.

The Road Safety Authority warned drivers to be extra vigilant of falling debris, high sided vehicles and vulnerable motorists as gale force winds sweep across the country today and overnight.
