Taxi drivers to face stricter laws come January

Taxi drivers who breach regulations could have their licenses suspended or face hefty fines, under new laws to be introduced from January.

The Taxi Regulation Act, to be published before the end of the year, will also ban the transfer or sale of taxi licences and put a limit of nine years on the age of vehicles.

It is one of a range of measures aimed at reducing the number of rogue operators and making taxi driving more professional and accountable.

Hugh Cregan, Director of Transport Investment and Taxi Regulation, says taxis will also be getting new blue and green stickers on their front doors.

"The point of this is to mitigate against the operation of illegal taxis. These are signs that will be on the vehicle 24/7, unlike the roof sign which is a removable object.

We are convinced these signs could make a significant difference to prevent people from operating illegally."
