Taoiseach: UN verdict on Ireland's abortion laws 'non-binding'

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny says the UN's damning report on Ireland's abortion laws is "not binding".

Last week the body's Human Rights Committee called for the constitutional ban on the practice to be scrapped, as it subjects women to suffering and discrimination.

The Irish Times reports Mr Kenny made the comment as he announced the setting up of a citizens convention to examine the issue.

The Taoiseach said its first task will be to look at the eighth amendment to the constitution, but the UN ruling has increased pressure on the Government to hold a referendum on repealing the law.

Mr Kenny said: "The UN committee’s verdict in this sensitive and distressing case is non-binding. It is not like the European Court."
