Taoiseach set to call General Election tomorrow

It is understood that the Taoiseach will wait until tomorrow to dissolve the Dáil and call the General Election.

The Taoiseach met Tánaiste Joan Burton this morning, and while ultimately the decision is his, it is understood that they have agreed that the election will take place on Friday February 26.

Mr Kenny must to travel to Áras an Uachtaráin and seek the dissolution of the Dáil, but he is not now expected to do that until tomorrow.

It is thought that part of the reasoning is to allow for discussion at the Public Accounts Committee and in the Dáil chamber itself today on the issue of alleged abuse at a foster home in the South East.

Also, this evening will see the first Exchequer returns for 2016 published, which Government parties are likely to use to claim that their recovery plan is working.

Enda Kenny will address the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party tonight before election campaigning begins in earnest tomorrow.
