Taoiseach refuses to be drawn on incinerator numbers

24/10/2007 - 13:01:36
The Taoiseach is refusing to be drawn on how many waste incinerators will be built in Ireland over the coming years.

Bertie Ahern was answering questions in the Dáil from Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore, who wanted to know if the Government had decided on a figure.

Minister John Gormley recently said he believed just two incinerators were needed, not the eight being planned by the Government.

However, Mr Ahern refused to give an answer in the Dáil this morning, saying the capacity of waste they burn would determine the amount needed.

He also defended incineration, saying Ireland needed to use modern technology to move away from dumping waste in landfill.
