Fine Gael says it wants to end the passive welfare culture in Ireland.
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has announced the party would introduce a new working family payment if in Government after the election.
Mr Kenny told the Dublin Chamber of Commerce annual dinner last night that the party has to promote work over welfare.
He said: "In the upcoming budget, and indeed in the contest beyond, I will prioritise measures that boost jobs and break that cycle of joblessness and poverty.
"I've had enough of a passive welfare cultre in Ireland. Welfare has to be a lifeline for those that need it.
"It's not meant to be, and must not be their life."
The President of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce says business in the city needs to pick the best partners in the general election.
Greg Clarke told the Chambers dinner last night that the upcoming election is the most important in 25 to 30 years.
Mr Clarke said: "Will these partners make the strategic plan happen? Will they create the flagship policy to demonstrate that we are pro-business and pro-small business?
"Will they make the long-term decisions necessary for our futures, and our kids' futures and their kids' futures?
"That decision is in our hands by encouraging everyone we know to exercise their right to get out and vote."
