Taoiseach: More people qualifying for ordinary medical cards
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has insisted that there has been no change to the policy on discretionary medical cards.
Mr Kenny said a discretionary medical card is still given to anyone who needs one but who exceeds the income limit.
Earlier this year it was reported that child cancer patients were having their cards removed.
But the Taoiseach said the only reason there are fewer cards being issued now is because more people qualify for one.
He said: "It's fallen by over 22,000, because those discretionary medical card owners now qualify for an ordinary medical card as they meet the income eligibility."
