The Taoiseach has defended the decision to close the Accident and Emergency unit at Roscommon Hospital from July 11.

Enda Kenny told the Dáil that the decision was being taken to guarantee patient safety.

He has been accused in the Dáil of breaking a pre-election promise made by Fine Gael to save Roscommon Hospital and to take the issue off the political agenda for good.

In the Dáil, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin said the Taoiseach and his party had been shown up for "making false promises in order to get elected".`

"Why did you reassure people about the future of Roscommon Hospital?" he asked the Taoiseach in the Dáil chamber.
