Taoiseach congratulates gold medallist Bethany

The Taoiseach has congratulated the swimmer Bethany Firth on becoming the first Irish person to win a gold medal for Ireland at the 2012 London Paralympics.

The 16-year-old from Co. Down clinched victory in the 100 metre backstroke despite only taking up swimming three years ago.

In a statement, Enda Kenny called Bethany's impressive win "an inspiration to all young people".

He added: "She has done her country, family, and Team Ireland proud."
