Taoiseach concerned about claim against Justice Minister

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny says he has sought a report into claims a Garda whistleblower was warned the Justice Minister Alan Shatter would "go after him" on the penalty points issue.

An alleged transcript of Sergeant Maurice McCabe's contact with the confidential recipient about the quashing of penalty points has been leaked and parts of it read into the Dáil record.

That included claims that the contact, appointed by the justice minister, warned about the details getting into the media, saying "If Shatter thinks you are screwing him you're finished".

The Taoiseach says he is very concerned about these claims.

He said: "The confidential recipient has to be seen to be a person who can be trusted.

"Now you speak of access of collusions, you speak of heading in a particular direction, you speak of guns being trained on whistleblowers, this is a matter of particluar concern.

"I haven't spoken to the confidential recipient, I've asked that the Department of Justice furnish me with a report."
