Taoiseach calls for national debate on porn

The Taoiseach has called for a national debate on pornography, saying some young minds are being "tainted and even corrupted" by it.

He made the comments at the launch of a new helpline for the victims of crime this afternoon.

In a discussion on sexual assault, he expressed worry about pornography and so-called "lads mags" - and the role he believes they have in influencing younger people.

He said it was time for a national conversation around the issue, and said it would form part of the Government's agenda for a more caring country.

"There's clearly an issue that needs to be addressed," he said. "Young minds are in some cases being corrupted and tainted by an avalanche of this material."
