It comes as the 25th Seanad meets for the first time today.

Mr Kenny was expected to give the nod to his deputy leader and former Minister, James Reilly.

The Taoiseach said: "I am pleased to appoint Senator Jerry Buttimer as Leader of the new Seanad which meets for the first time today.
