Tánaiste: 'Seismic change' needed in attitudes
The Tánaiste Mary Coughlan says there needs to be a "seismic change in the attitudes" of civil service workers towards the level of spending on public sector pay.
And she warned that unless State employees embrace changes in their earnings and work practices, the Government will make decisions without their consent.
Mary Coughlan made the remarks ahead of a series of countrywide protest marches being planned for this afternoon.
She said public servants need to come to terms with the fact that the Government has no option but to introduce some form of wage cuts.
Ms Coughlan said: "If there are other options in which we can reduce our pay expenditure in this country, then the Government is more than willing to listen.
"There's going to have to be a seismic change in attitudes.
"The Taoiseach has been vociferous at looking at public sector reform, but if people are not prepared to do that, at the end of the day the Government is going to have to make a decision."
