Tánaiste: CEO bonus a matter for Ulster Bank

The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has said he does not agree with bank bonuses, but has said it is a matter for Ulster Bank to decide if their CEO Jim Brown should get a bonus this year.

Eamon Gilmore made the comment after Ulster Bank announced that it'll be at least the middle of next week before the backlog of payments, caused by a major technical problem, will be cleared.

It has been 12 days since a software malfunction hit the bank and some branches have extended their opening hours again this weekend, to deal with customer queries and transactions.

Stephen Hester, the head of RBS, Ulster Bank's parent company in the UK, has already announced that he is giving up his bonus, saying it would be inappropriate after letting customers down.

However, Mr Gilmore said because Ulster Bank is not under the State guarantee, the Government cannot tell it what to do when it comes to bonuses.
