Tánaiste backs calls for Garda overhaul and new regulator

Joan Burton has given her backing to calls for an urgent overhaul of the Gardaí at all levels.

The Tánaiste said she supports comments by the Minister for Justice, who claims there is now a public distrust in the force.

Burton said she is keen to see that new regulator as soon as possible.

"I welcome that Minister Fitzgerald is a strong supporter," she said.

"I think it's one of the reforms which is essential to a whole suite of reforms that this Government has committed itself to."

Frances Fitzgerald said she will publish legislation to create a new independent policing regulator before the end of this week.
