Swimmers warned to avoid Sandymount strand

Dublin City Council issued a warning to bathers today not to swim at Dublin's Sandymount Strand, due to elevated levels of bacteria in the water.

The cause of the high levels is not known, and the City Council issued a Prohibition of Bathing Notice on a temporary basis this afternoon.

Samples taken at the strand at the Half Moon Swimming Club at the South Wall were both found to be outside minimum standards.

Another sample was taken today and the results will be known on Friday.
