The St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) has expressed concern at the fact that 45,000 applications for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance have yet to be processed.

The SVP said thousands of families may not receive their allowance before the new school term starts at the end of the month.

It is asking schools to make allowances for children that may not have their uniforms on time.

SVP spokesperson John-Mark McCafferty advised families worried about making ends meet to seek help.

He advised families in difficulty to speak to their local Community Welfare Officer, to an SVP representative or to the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS).
