Survey outlines major hike in on-campus student rents

College students continue to be hit by the housing crisis with a major hike in the cost of on-campus accommodation.

According to a survey by the Irish Independent, rents have increased by up to €760 for student accommodation this year

UCD is the most expensive college to live on campus with their cheapest option costing almost €6,000 per year and their most expensive at €10,480.

Trinity is the second most expensive at €6,587 per year, followed by Maynooth (€5,700) and NUI Galway (€5,145).

President of the Union of Students in Ireland, Annie Hoey, says digs are a great option for students.

She said: "If the cost is too much, we recommend that you look at alternative accommodation options and one of the options we would recommend is digs.

"Digs can often be very near to the campus, because they are houses renting out a room to students, so sometimes they can be a very viable option for students.

"We are calling on people who have a spare room and living in the vicinity of an institution to put that room up on this website and to consider renting it out to students."
