Survey finds Irish people need to become familiar with their home country
More than a third of Irish people are unable to find Cavan on a map, a survey by Jury's Inn has found.
The survey also found that almost one in five Irish people do not recognise Tipperary and 20% cannot identify Mayo.
The study highlights that many Irish people are not familiar with well known locations in the country, so that a quarter of us do not know where Benbulben is and one in 10 confess they have no idea where the Giant's Causeway is.
The survey claims that up to 72% of people are keen to explore the country, yet 25% claim to have visited more attractions abroad than in Ireland.
The research suggested that people had trouble in determining if some of our nation's more unusual place names were real or fake.
A huge 82% of those surveyed reckon that Doodys Bottoms does not exist, something that the people of Co. Wicklow might take offence to.
Also, 64% had never heard of Bastardstown in the sunny south East of Co Wexford, believing it to be a made-up name.
