Supermarkets neglect to remove sweets from check-outs

The country's biggest supermarkets appear to have turned down a Safefood request to ban sweets at check-outs.

Safefood, the body that promotes awareness of issues like obesity, says consumers have told them they find it hard to resist junk food near tills.

Safefood has written to five supermarket chains asking them to help consumers make healthy choices by removing sweets from check-out shelves.

However, it is understood so far none have given a commitment to do so.
