More than 11,000 people went to A&E departments last year after attempting to self harm, according to figures released by the National Centre for Youth Mental Health.

However, it claimed that only 10% of those who self harm seek help for their condition.

Executive Director of the National Centre for Youth Mental Health, Dr Tony Bates said that self harm is the most powerful indicator of identifying a young person at risk of suicide.

He claims up to 50% of young people who take their own lives have previously self harmed.

A total of 431 suicides were recorded in Ireland last year.
