Study highlights poor literacy standards in disadvantaged schools

28/04/2005 - 11:16:06
Large numbers of students in disadvantaged primary schools have low standards of literacy, according to a study conducted by the Department of Education.

The study found more than 40% of such children were in the lowest achievement bracket for literacy, while almost two-thirds performed poorly in maths.

It also found that up to 50% of children in disadvantaged areas missed up to 20 school days every year.

In a report published today, the inspectors who carried out the study highlighted the importance of early education and recommended the introduction of more learning supports in English and maths.
