Students take fight for degree course to the High Court
Two second year college students have gone to the High Court to fight the closure of their degree course at the Athlone Institute of Technology.
Megan Munnelly claims she will have wasted a year of her life if a decision to cancel her degree course in Audiology is not reversed.
The 19-year-old student from Mayo is one of 21 students entering second year at Athlone Institute of Technology who was recently told the four-year course is being discontinued.
It is the only undergraduate programme of its kind in Ireland but it appears there are problems with placements and funding.
Megan is fighting the closure along with 22-year-old student Diarmuid O’Connor.
The legal challenge is to be heard next Tuesday.
Her concerns about time wasting are echoed by her solicitor Nick McStay who believes an amicable solution is possible.
