Students' representatives have accused the Government of going against their promises to support life-long learning.
As Budget 2013 was revealed yesterday, students were hit with a €250 euro increase to the capitation fee next year, and for the next two years after that.
They will also have to deal with an increase in the threshold for the grant.
"The student protests that we've seen over the past month will escalate at this point," said Union of Students in Ireland president John Logue.
"I think people are starting to realise that when you cut higher education it's not just the students themselves who are impacted - it's their families, it's their parents and indeed it's the local businesses and local communities who are going to get severely hit with these decreases.
"So it won't just be students on the streets any more in terms of protecting education."
