Storm damage leaves 14,000 without electricity

The storms have caused widespread damage to the electricity network across the country.

The ESB say it's working to restore power to over fourteen-thousand customers.

Many homes and businesses in the midlands, west and north-west are without electricity this evening - with Mayo and Donegal the worst affected counties.

Power has now been restored in some places, but with over 250 separate faults affecting the network, caused mainly by falling branches, the ESB say it will take time to restore full service.

Spokesperson Bevin Cody says that technicians are working through the night.

"We've restored power to a lot of customers who had lost supply earlier today as a result of the storm damage, but there's still about 15,000 customers without supply - mainly in the north west," she said.

"There's a huge number of separate faults on the network as a result of the high winds … Over 260 separate faults."
