State owed €74m due to consultants' delay signing claims

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has stated today that €74m in State claims due for collection from private health insurers remain outstanding.
A new PAC report has found that the delay is as a result of medical consultants not signing off on claims in a timely fashion.
The Committee also said that the Health Service Executive has failed to put procedures in place for collecting income that it is owed.
Fine Gael TD Simon Harris, - a member of PAC, said that it is no way to run a health service.
"It certainly seems that the health service were more eager in terms of pursuing patients who attended A&E, with [the health service using] debt collectors at times, than they were pursuing consultants who are earning vast salaries for … literally just signing a form," he said.
