Some people reading this 'may not be alive to ring in New Year': RSA

The Road Safety Authority has said it is concerned about the high level of road fatalities this year.

The organisation says 188 people have died on the roads so far in 2014.

In 2013, 190 people were killed in crashes - the highest figure compared with the previous seven years.

The RSA said it was worried that even more people would lose their lives on the roads this year.

Communications manager with the Road Safety Authority Brian Farrell said: "The chances are we will exceed that figure. There may be people (reading this) who may not be around to ring in the New Year, and that is the sad reality of road safety this year."

He said there had been a significant increase in the number of pedestrians and cyclists using the road, and that the number of cyclists killed had almost doubled.
