Socialist Party to comment on Daly resignation; she says Wallace link is 'nonsense'

The Socialist Party is expected to make a further statement within the next hour about the resignation of TD Clare Daly from the party.

The party yesterday accused Deputy Daly of "reckless misjudgement" over her support for Independent TD and tax evader Mick Wallace.

Daly, who has redesignated herself to the United Left Alliance (ULA) after her resignation, said the content of the Socialist Party statement was "inaccurate" but added that she did not wish to engage in a war of words with the leadership of the party.

In an interview with RTE's 'This Week' programme today, Deputy Daly said it was "absolute nonsense" to suggest that her decision to resign from the party was due to her support for Mick Wallace.

She said she supported Socialist Party calls for Deputy Wallace to fully replay his tax liability, but had not called for his resignation, and that the Socialist Party had not done so.

The party was unequivocal in its statement that Deputy Daly's decision to resign was due to her connection with Dputy Wallace.

"In our view, the fundamental reason for Clare’s resignation is that she now places more value on her political connection with Independent TD Mick Wallace than on the political positions and work of the Socialist Party," the party statement said.
