Snow of up to eight cms prompts warning to drivers, walkers

Motorists are advised to drive with care this morning with five weather warnings in place across the country.

Driving conditions are treacherous in many parts, in particular around Barnesmore Gap, Ballyshannon and outside Letterkenny in Donegal.

AA Roadwatch is advising caution too around Fermoy in Co Cork, Nenagh, Roacrea and Thurles in Co Tipperary and Mullingar in Co Westmeath.

Met Éireann issued a status 'orange' snow-ice warning and a wind alert last night - along with three 'yellow' warnings.

Up to 8 centimetres of snow fell across Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Clare, Kerry and Limerick.

The highest amounts were forecast to fall on high ground in Connacht and west Ulster.

Meteorologist with Met Éireann David Rogers said there would be some change to the weather conditions later today.

"There will be a change to different threats with strong winds and heavy rain pushing across the country," he said.

"There won't be any change to less cold conditions until the middle of the day (when the wind and rain area expected)."

Meanwhile, people are being urged to check in on their elderly neighbours during the inclement weather conditions.

CEO of ALONE Sean Moynihan said the extreme weather conditions could pose health risks for people in isolated areas.
