A 30-year-old Sligo man has admitted falsely imprisoning and killing pensioner Eugene Gillespie.

Sligo native to be tried for Eugene Gillespie murder

A 30-year-old Sligo man has admitted falsely imprisoning and killing pensioner Eugene Gillespie.

Simon McGinley of Connaughton Road is to be tried for murder.

McGinley was arraigned at the Central Criminal Court on a charge of murdering 67-year-old Eugene Gillespie on the September 22, 2012.

He replied that he was not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter.

He's also admitted trespassing with intent to commit robbery, and falsely imprisoning Eugene Gillespie at a building on Old Market Street three days before the pensioner's death.

The manslaughter plea is not acceptable to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A jury has been sworn in to try the murder charge.

The case will get underway before Mr Justice Garrett Sheehan tomorrow. It is due to last around two weeks.
