A six-year-old girl is recovering after being caught up in the latest wave of gun crime in Limerick.

She was injured when a gun was fired shortly after 3pm yesterday afternoon.

The young girl was in the front garden of a house in Southill.

The six-year-old did not receive life threatening injuries and was discharged last night after being treated at the Mid Western Regional Hospital.

Local politicians say it is a very worrying escalation that a young child has been caught in the crossfire of the city latest gun attack.

Gardaí say the girl was not intentionally targeted.

Meanwhile a pump-action shotgun and a number of cartridges have been recovered from a derelict house in the Limerick area.
