Siptu workers may strike if water plan goes ahead

Siptu is threatening industrial action, including strikes, if the plan to establish the Irish Water Company goes ahead.

The Department of the Environment is to transfer the operation of water services to Bord Gais from local authorities over the coming years.

Siptu stated that there has been no consultation on the matter and staff working in the sector have received no assurances for their future.

The trade union, which is currently holding regional meetings with 2,500 of its members, is to ballot the water service workers in the coming weeks.
