SIPTU downbeat over proposals for new national pay deal

31/05/2006 - 15:59:30
SIPTU's Jack O'Connor says he has a problem with a number of the points in the current proposal for a new national pay deal.

He was speaking as he entered a meeting of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions this afternoon.

ICTU's Executive is now debating the social partnership proposal which emerged in the early hours of this morning.

It includes provisions for pay rises of ten per cent to be paid over 27 months.

Jack O'Connor wasn't sounding overly positive as he entered talks with his union colleagues:

"We have problems with regard to pensions and we have problems with regard to the absence of local bargaining, and we have problems in relation to some aspects of the labour standards,” he said.

“They could be possibly resolved, but it is not clear how with what is before us at the minute.”
