SIPTU is calling for tougher sentences for those found guilty of assaulting emergency service workers.
The union is urging the Government to review safety measures for members of the emergency services, and the punishment for those convicted of crimes against them.
The call comes after an incident in Dublin last night in which stones were thrown at fire fighters when they attended a bonfire at Basin Street flats.
SIPTU spokesperson Brendan O'Brien said: "All of the authorities involved, including the Gardaí and the Government need to make sure there are proper consequences for people who are found to hinder our members in the course of their duties."
