Sinn Féin most popular party

The latest opinion poll shows Sinn Fein and the Independents are making gains in popularity.

Fine Gael, Labour, and Fianna Fail have all suffered losses according to the Sunday Independent poll.

Water charges and the Mairia Cahill case were to the fore of the political agenda, over the past 10 days, whilst this survey was being carried out by Millward Brown.

1,000 people were questioned, resulting in a four point gain for Sinn Fein, and a two point rise for Independents.

Sinn Féin is now Ireland's most popular party on 26%. Both Government parties have made losses, with Fine Gael down to 22% (-3), and Labour down to 7% (-2)

Fianna Fáil dropped one point to 20%, meaning that the three traditionally strongest parties - Fine Gael, Labour, and Fianna Fáil - with their combined 49%, would find it difficult to form a Government if these figures reflected election results .

Almost half of voters - 47% - want to see a new political party emerge.

The poll was conducted over the period in which Sinn Féin was suffering negative reaction over allegations of covering up sexual abuse in the Mairia Cahill case.
