Sinn Féin has defended stance on abolition of Special Criminal Court

The deputy leader of Sinn Féin has defended the party's stance on the abolition of the Special Criminal Court.

Mary Lou Mc Donald has said this weekend's gangland murder in a Dublin hotel was not prevented by the existence of the court designed to tackle terrorist activities.

Sinn Féin members have been under fire from other political parties since they revealed want to get rid of the Special Criminal Court.

The Taoiseach has promised if Fine Gael is re-elected they would establish a second one.

But Deputy Mc Donald has said the absence of a jury is unjust: “Events like this have happened whilst we have a Special Criminal Court.

“The way in which this is debated is sometimes it is reflected that because of this Special Criminal Court that somehow this is the solution to the issue. It is not.

“I do also accept that you have to protect juries and jurors - there is absolutely no question about that.

“But there are ways in which you can do that without suspending what is absolutely a core value in terms of the proper administration of justice.”
