Former MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon is to lead hundreds of people on a charity walk to promote suicide awareness.
The 1970 Eurovision winner aims to raise funds for bereavement group, Console in the 7km event in Galway city later this month.
Console, which was established in 2002, estimates that an average of six people are severely affected by somebody taking their own life.
Console spokeswoman Margaret Tierney said fundraisers, such as the ’Walking in Memory of Our Loved Ones’ event on May 17, are crucial to maintain suicide bereavement services in the current economic climate.
“The devastation of families whose lives will never be the same again inspires us to keep going and provide all the help that we can,” she said.
“We are very aware that everyone has to tighten their belts and are being asked for money from every angle, so we really appreciate any support.”
Console’s annual conference in Dublin last month was attended by 1,000 delegates and addressed by President Mary McAleese and Dublin city coroner Brian Farrell.
