'Significant risk' of HIV transmission between mother and unborn child, court told

A paediatrician has told the High Court there is a significant risk that an expectant mother with HIV will pass the virus on to her child.

The HSE is looking for an order that anti retro-viral drugs can to be administered to the woman's baby after birth.

The heavily pregnant woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, believes the drugs are dangerous and wants to establish their safety before consenting to the treatment.
