Shatter: Garda service quality will improve despite station closures

Justice Minister Alan Shatter has today insisted that that the closure of Garda stations will not diminish community policing.

A total of 95 rural stations are shutting down today as part of a restructuring of the network, following the closure of 39 last year.

Minister Shatter said that the move is not designed to deprive communities of resources, but rather to improve service quality.

He also criticised what he said were "alarmist comments" being made be some politicians on the issue for "self-serving political gain".
