The Government will today outline plans to separate Shannon Airport from the Dublin Airport Authority by December 31.
It is hoped the move will create 3,000 new jobs as Shannon will be developed into an international centre for aviation-industry services, including pilot, crew and aviation-engineer training facilities.
But unions representing staff at Shannon say this new business plan is not viable after an ICTU-commissioned report by the accountancy firm Mazars warned that it carries a "substantial implementation risk".
SIPTU's Tony Carroll said staff at Shannon would consider strike action if they were not happy with the proposals unveiled today.
"If assurances are not received, our members will do everything they can to protect themselves and industrial action can't be ruled out," he said.
